With over 90 miles of shore line, Blue Mesa is Colorado's largest body of water and is an abundant fishery. Blue Mesa was built in the Gunnison River in the 1960's and has a hydro-electricity producing dam. Blue Mesa is the first of three reservoirs along the Gunnison River which eventually runs through the Black Canyon. Located just 10 miles from Gunnison, Blue Mesa is famous for it's Kokanee Salmon, Brown Trout, and Lake Trout fishing. In Fact the last three state record lake trout have come from Blue Mesa including a monster 50 lb fish.
The best part of fishing Blue Mesa is that it offers almost year round fishing. However, early spring and late fall tend to be the most productive fishing times. We offer several types of fishing trips on Blue Mesa and would love to take you on an awesome fishing adventure.

Trips depart at 6:30 from Elk Creek Marina.

Lake Trout: Best Dates - Ice out thru May and Late fall
Trolling:     Using downriggers or lead core, learn to troll big baits for big fish. This is                   my most productive type of fishing for lake trout.
Jigging:     Jigging is a slow, methodical, fishing technique for big fish that takes                patience and finesse but can have big rewards.
We relase all lake trout over 30"

Browns: Best Dates - Ice Out thru May and Late Fall
Casting:    By far and away the funnest way to catch browns is casting baits to the                         shore or jigging the shore line.
Trolling:     Trolling is a very effective technique to catch large browns. We will troll                         mostly with downriggers or planner boards.

Kokanee: Best Dates - Mid May thru June and August
Trolling:    Kokanee trolling is a precise technique. It may take a while to find the fish,                        but once we locate a school, fishing can be fast and furious.

6 Hour Ice Trip

Multi Species: Available Late December thru Mid March
We will spend the day moving, moving, and moving again until we find the fish. We offer shelters, rods, reels, power auger, vexilars and everything you need for a great day on the ice for a variety of fish, some of which reach real trophy size.

Blue Mesa Reservoir
I love fishing Colorado's southern lakes. In fact I have been fishing them my whole life and now I get to share them with you! We will be fishing from a fully equipped 20' nitro sport (See in photo gallery) with a 150 mercury engine, a kicker motor, electric trolling motor, downriggers, and everything we need to have a great time. Our trip will be a 6 hour day dock to dock, so drive time doesn't count. We will either meet at the boat ramp or your hotel depending on the lake and prefer to be fishing by 6:30 but times are flexible. All of the trips also include snacks, and drinks. All you need is a camera, any extra food you may want (No Alcohol), a Colorado fishing license, and appropriate clothing. Remember conditions in Colorado can change fast, even the middle of summer can be cold and early spring can be warm. Bring plenty of clothes in layers so you can adjust to the conditions and also bring a hat and gloves. We have only one rule: I started guiding because I love taking friends and family fishing, so when you're on my boat, where fishing as friends.
$100 deposit required on all trips. Non-Refundable if canceled within 15 days of trip.
Taylor Reservoir
Sanchez Reservoir
I LOVE Taylor Reservoir, and now that we have teamed up with Three Rivers Outfitting, we are able to bring you a trophy fishery on a gorgeous lake. Located 45 minutes from Gunnison up the Taylor Canyon, Taylor has awesome Lake Trout, Browns and Pike. These trips will start Mid May at Ice out and go through most of the Summer. Taylor is the full Colorado fishing experience with the chance to put a truly nice fish in the boat. If you have never seen it, you are missing out.

Browns and Laker's: Best Dates - Mid May thru June and all Fall
We primarily troll Taylor with downriggers and we end up with both Browns and Lake Trout and an occasional Rainbow. I am still working on the Pike at Taylor and hope to offer these trips soon. Kokanee simply are not worth the trip to Taylor unless you are interested in a late fall snagging trip. Hit Taylor in May, June, September and October for some awesome fishing.

Taylor is my favorite lake when it comes to Lake Trout through the ice. Our average fish through the ice will be in the 3-5 lb range with 15-20 fish days not uncommon.  We will find occasional Brown and Rainbow trout as well which have been known to surpass the 5 lb mark.
One word: PIKE! Sanchez Reservoir, located in the South East corner of the San Luis Valley, is a hidden jewel when it comes to pike. I grew up fishing this lake, and it is truly an over looked fishery. We often have 20 fish days on this lake. We even have the chance of running into some of the walleye that hide in the depths of Sanchez. We will start fishing the day the ice comes off, usually mid April, for pre-spawn, hungry, mean northerns. This is typically a casting trip which means you are holding onto the rod when it gets slammed. We can also troll for those who prefer this type of fishing.

AWESOME AREA LINKS
All trips are operated with commercial use permits from Colorado Division of Wildlife, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, or National Forest Service. Taylor Reservoir trips are done for Three Rivers Outfitting.
As the Concessionaire on Curecanti National Recreation Area, we now have the sold docking rights for power boats on Morrow Point Reservoir. This is an incredably picturesque trip accompanied by out of this world fishing. We will mostly troll for kokannee, Brown's and an occasional Lake Trout. Morrow Point is aproximately 13 miles long in the head end of the Black Canyon. The trip starts with a 232 step decent into the Gunnison River bottom and then a short hike down stream to our pontoon boats. Lunch is provided on these trips.
